Shelter Stories

May 2009

Who could say no to little puppies or adult dogs in distress. It is very difficult even if one has no real financial means to help them. Their pain is understood and it cannot be ignored.

Recently we have come across several puppies an adult dogs that have needed urgent help to continue living.

The first puppy in the picture was attacked by another dog and her eye popped out. The person that rescued this little puppy is a woman that helps animals all the time, but has almost no income, so she asked for our help. Not that we have much, but there was no way we would leave the puppy in that state. In the next pictures you can see the little puppy after the vet operated on her. She looks very pretty with her eye back in. A great success. This little puppy has already been adopted by a young woman who named her Dulce Canela.

The second puppy lives with a low income family in Arraijan. He got out one night and as innocent as he is he crossed a road “without looking both ways” and was run over. As can be appreciated, the bone in one of his hind legs broke and went through the flesh. His family found him the next day and looked for us for help, since they had no means to help him. The puppy chewed his own bone as he was in so much pain and distress. He has already been intervened and after two weeks at the clinic he is now being looked after by one of our people. His wound is still open so he cannot go back to his family yet.

At the time of these tragedies, other tragedies struck. A pregnant Dalmata dog lost her puppies. Her family is also low income and looked for us since the Dalmata was in pretty bad shape. We took her to the vet. One day, while the Dalmata was still at the vet clinic, Jaime went to speak to this Dalmata’s human, an old lady. While they were speaking, news arrived that the brother of this old lady had died. She was heart broken. When Jaime told me about that, I prayed with further purpose that the Dalmata would go through fine, since of course, for most of these low income people in Arraijan, their dog is part of the family, just as it is for people who can afford to take them to the vet clinic by their own means. It would have been very hard for this old lady to lose her dog as well. The Dalmata did make it and was very happy to return home, feeling healthy and strong. Her people were very happy indeed to see her alive and well.

We have had other health matters to resolve. For example, a dog with a sticker tumor that was already infected and smelly. The person who rescued her does not have the means to help her. We decided to get the dog to the vet and give her at least one treatment, though of course she needs more treatments to recover. Another example, three puppies born from a dog that was thrown out of her house when she was about to give birth. The puppies have been to the vet and are now receiving medication.

The day we took the little dog with the broken leg out of the vet clinic, we were able to lower the amount due, thanks to some donations, but we were left owing $495.00. So, with all the added expenses we have to meet weekly, I just expressed aloud the following wish: “I hope we do not get contacted for a while about another dog with a broken leg”. Of course, that afternoon a man called me and told me that he had witnessed when a female dog was run over. He had to take her out of the road to avoid her becoming a road kill, and he needed help to assist her. He will keep the dog, he has assured us, without us asking about it actually. I got a bit stressed at first, but then who can say no to someone in distress. I could just imagine the dog in so much pain, and this man trying to keep her warm and comfortable and hoping someone would help. I could feel for both. Soon I shall have pictures of this little girl. She is already at the vet clinic. One leg is broken, the other is dislocated. The vet says she can recover very well with an operation.

Hopefully, some people will assist financially these little fallen angels that have experienced such bad moments in their lives and have needed or actually still need support to successfully overcome such moments. We appreciate your support.
