Shelter Report - October 2011
SAN ROQUE DONATIONS
REPORT
Saturday October 22, 2011
1) Hello San Roque people. Here is the status of how we are doing. Please remember that in the last report, dated Wednesday October 12, 2011, I commented the following regarding the latest food deliveries and I quote:
“A) Friday October 7, 2011:
a) Food:
(i) SR1: Six (6) 30-kilo bags of Mimados (66 pounds each) to complete what remained pending for Friday (40 pounds), and for Saturday, Sunday and Monday (40 pounds would remain pending for Monday October 10). Six (6) 25-pound bags of Kirkland cat food for Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Note: At SR1, when food is given to the dogs, the quantities are measured with tanks. I was counting as additional the six extra pounds of food that come inside each 30-kilo bag of Mimados (compared to the 40-pound bags) but the six extra pounds disappear in the tanks, since measurement cannot be exact. As a result, no six additional pounds are left for the next feeding.
(ii) SR2: Three (3) 40-pound bags of Mimados dog food for Saturday and Sunday.
(iii) María Matilde: Two (2) 40-pound bags of Mimados dog food and one (1) 25-pound bag of Kirkland cat food.
b) Payments:
(i) Diómedes and Henry ($54 each).
(ii) Jaime and Matty ($56 each).
(iii) That Friday October 7, when I finally arrived to Arraijan, I had a gang of six children waiting with Ivan (one of the young men who carries the food) in Alto Bonito (near SR1). Even the children were waiting for me so they could help. Overall I gave them $12 for their help. There was also a bunch of dogs waiting for me in Alto Bonito with Jaime. The bark had spread that I was there and would not enter the Hogar since I was late, so some of the dogs that heard the gossip went to wait for me to say hello. I had taken some bread for them but it was not enough for that many dogs so in the store we got them $2 in additional bread.
c) Supermarket: Sip crema Jumbo Verd for Jaime ($2.25), Sip crema Jumbo Verd so that Matty keeps it until Henry request it ($2.25), Three sponges ($1.95), Palo Alto coffee 425gr ($6.10), two bread-rolls bags ($2.20), two Centinel trash bags extra large ($6.60), itbm tax $0.91.
B) Monday October 10, 2011:
a) Food:
(i) SR1: Four (4) bags of dog food of 40-50 pounds each, four (4) 40-pound bags of Mimados dog food, three (3) 30-kilo bags of Mimados dog food (66 pounds each). Twenty pounds of dog food were used to complete Monday, and food was left for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday inclusive, with something left for Saturday. Four (4) 25-pound bags of Kirkland cat food. On Monday, the meows were so high, that I gave away half extra bag of cat food and the other half was saved for another day to give them something extra (we also gave the cats some milk). Cat food, therefore, reaches for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
(ii) SR2: Seven (7) 40-pound bags of Mimados dog food, Three (3) bags of dog food of 40 to 50 pounds each. Complete for this week. SR2, in addition, received a 30-kilo bag of dog food and another 39.6-pound bag of dog food through a donation received by Isabel, so that SR2 has food to start next week, for Monday and some for Tuesday.
(iii) María Matilde: One (1) 40-pound bags of Mimados dog food and (1) bag of dog food of 40 to 50 pounds. Complete for this week.
b) Payments: $12 for the boys that carried the food in Arraijan and $1 tip to the boy at Melo (for loading the food into the car).
c) Extras: $15 in bread and powder milk for the dogs and cats at SR1.
d) Pillows: We took one pillow for Jaime and another for Matty (Sagrario’s donation).”
Bellow I detail what corresponds to this Report for Saturday October 22.

There is an expense I never mention, and it is the gas for my car, which I use to run errands for the Hogar San Roque, to take food to the Hogar San Roque in Arraijan, and to feed cats and raccoons in Panama every day, which means I have to turn on and off the car several times, since I have a few stops on the way (turning on and off the car uses a lot of gas but I cannot leave the car on and alone). Of course, I do drive the car for other matters aside from the ones mentioned, but the gas is spent mainly in what I mention. I fill the tank an average of three times per month, and every time it is $60 to $80. These gas expenses are covered by CAC, AnaMaríaL. and Sagrario. Between errands for the Hogar San Roque and taking food to Arraijan, I guess I spend a monthly average of $120 to $150. Sagrario also uses her car to run errands for the Hogar San Roque, and her gas expenses are covered by her.

Other San Roque news:
(i) The Dalmata Puppy with the black ears went to her new home on Saturday October 15, with the assistance of Jennifer and Irving. Apparently the man who was going to adopt her had to go to work to another area in Panama and was unable to adopt her, of which Ana Ivette let us know immediately. Jennifer got a new home for the Dalmata Puppy with a young woman who is very loving and responsible. We are very happy for the little Dalmata (mix of Dalmata and Panamanian actually). The last thing we learnt, through the follow up made by Jennifer, is that the little Dalmata is very happy, running around the house with her new two year old dog sister, and that her human mom takes good care of her, taking her to the veterinarian, looking for food she likes, and in general, giving her lots of love. Congratulations Dalmatita, we shall soon learn the name given to you by your family. We wish you a complete and always happy life.
(ii) Today the water engine was damaged at SR1. Diomedes was able to fill the water tanks almost to the top, and the dogs have water for today and tomorrow, as long as no water is used to wash. This morning Jaime was meant to go to Chorrera to look for prices for the fence, but the unexpected happened, and well, the plan changed. Instead, Jaime came to Panama to leave the water engine to be fixed. From Monday on, till the machine is fixed, we shall have to hire young men to carry water from the river so that the dogs and cats can drink.
(iii) We have problems with parasites (worms). The rains have not helped in that sense, and the earth, which the dogs like to eat to get purged, vibrates with parasites. So, we have requested Dr. Guevara to go next Tuesday to SR1, SR2 and Maria Matilde’s place to check the dogs and cats, to collect samples of feces and urine, and finally to bring said samples to the lab for testing so as to give us an idea of what we’re dealing with and fix it. CAC is going to cover the expenses. Dr. Guevara always gives us special prices and the lab is going to make us a discount. These parasites (worms) are not resolved with deworming only, no in this case at least. We have already tried it, and this goes beyond that. In Arraijan (the whole town) some dogs are having a hard time with parasites and probably as well in other places in Panama. An accurate diagnosis is very important to know what to do, that is the reason for the tests. Sagrario has already acquired 20 large tubes of Pracan dewormer so as to deworm some dogs, and we surely shall need more. However, although this regular dewormer works with certain worms, it might not be as efficient with other worms whose larvae wander through different organs of the dog’s body, or in cases that involve more physical damage or where the parasite is simply virulent. Recently a woman in Punta Paitilla almost lost her dog to Isospora spp, a coccidian. A correct diagnosis led to the correct veterinarian treatment.
(iv) The two dogs undergoing TVT (sticker tumor) treatment, have already completed said treatment. They shall go for a check up tomorrow. Thanks to Isabel and to the people who gave support with the treatment, for giving this benefit to dogs who needed it so much.
(v) We have a new friend, Gina, a professional photographer, who shall go to the Hogar San Roque to photograph dogs in order to prepare pretty presentations, so as to give them on adoption. The idea is that Gina joins in the labor developed by Jennifer, with regards to adoptions. This makes me very happy, since the pictures I take come out very regular. Elsita’s husband has also offered his services as photographer, and his pictures are beautiful, so we hope soon to have many beautiful pictures to show you.
(vi) Last Tuesday, Spay Panama spayed/neutered about fifteen dogs/cats. Most were from SR1, SR2 and Maria Matilde’s, others belonged to low-income people, amongst them the pretty kitty. Thank you Spay Panama for this so vital support to the Hogar San Roque and Arraijan.
(vii) Although I do not have the details, María Matilde informed me that her friend Itzel donated to her some dog food bags. However, we have completed the food for the dogs under the care of Maria Matilde since we know that four bags per week is a bit tight, and Maria Matilde also feeds some street dogs, and other dogs of not very responsible people that let them go hungry. So the extra bags are always a relief.
(viii) Isabel took some chicken legs for the dogs at SR2, and she always does. Isabel donates chicken legs since, aside from the fact that the dogs like the soup (they do not receive the bones), said soup raises the blood platelets, which results in better health for those dogs that could have them a bit low. Matty used to always buy chicken legs in the past, but they are getting scarce and she cannot get anymore. Isabel has more access to this product and since she loves those doggy kids at SR2, she runs the errands and takes them chicken legs often. Thank you Isabel.
(ix) Jaime arrived a while ago and already had with him the pretty kitty, and she is no doubt very pretty, beautiful, a mixture of Siamese. I was very pleased to meet her, and to know that she shall be back with her darling little girl. As it happened, when Jaime was on his way to Panama, some people from the Llano in Arraijan were trying to locate him urgently (people find out about the Hogar San Roque and look for help, that has always been so) and it turns out that a gray and white kitty had given birth to dead kittens and the kitty was howling in physical pain. Jaime phoned Patricia at Spay Panama who told him to take the gray and white kitty to be spayed. When Jaime arrived to my house to pick up the money for the taxi, he brought the gray and white kitty just spayed in a bag that is quite safe for a cat under anesthesia (while she does not wake up) and the pretty kitty in a box, so I lent him the only kennel remaining in my power, that from the Club de Amigos, and well, the two kitties returned to Arraijan in that kennel. Thank you Redna from the Club de Amigos for the kennel… As soon as I reveal the pictures of the kitties, I shall send them to you. Jaime did not bring a kennel because when he left Arraijan to come to Panama, his cel phone got turned off and I could not let him know to bring a kennel to pick up the pretty kitty. The matter of the gray and white kitty (beautiful as well and I already saw her half awake from the anesthesia) was an unexpected surprise, which implied life or death, so that Jaime had no time to go back to the Hogar to look for a kennel. So good that the two kitties are fine.
10) CURRENT STATUS: We have dog food at SR1 up to Monday inclusive, cat food up to Tuesday inclusive. At SR2 we have dog food up to Tuesday inclusive. At Maria Matilde’s we are complete for next week.
We have in reserve a bag of Mimados, which I got with the sum remaining from the respective donations of MaryR y Ramona. In the current account we have $51.41.
Thank you all for your loving support! The San Roque dogs and cats send many woofs y meows as thanks.
Mari Pily
